Married Couple Killed Jaywalking

Press Conference Regarding Double Pedestrian Traffic Fatality

When: Monday, July 22, 2002 at 1:00 p.m.

Where:
Intersection of Riverside Drive and Ranchito Avenue Van Nuys, CA

Los Angeles: Sunday, On July 21, 2002, at approximately 9:10 p.m., 41 year-old Santos Mendoza and his wife, 38 year-old Floridalma Estrada, were illegally crossing Riverside Drive in the Van Nuys Area when they were struck and killed by a vehicle driven by a 24 year-old male from Agoura Hills.

Pronounced dead at the scene, the Reseda residents were jaywalking in a darkened section of Riverside Drive when they were fatally hit by the oncoming truck. The driver of the vehicle and the responding LAPD officers attempted to render aid to the couple; however, both were pronounced dead at the collision scene.

The driver of the vehicle was questioned and released after it was determined that he was not under the influence and was driving responsibly.
