Fatal Traffic Collision

"Fatal Traffic Collision"

Los Angeles: On Monday, June 30, 2003, at about 9:40 p.m., a white 2001 Acura CL and a black 2003 Acura TL were racing northbound on Winnetka Avenue at a high rate of speed. A solo male driver in a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner was driving southbound on Winnetka Avenue, and was in the process of making a left turn to eastbound Roscoe Blvd, when his vehicle was struck by the 2001 white Acura CL, which was northbound on Winnetka Avenue approaching Roscoe Blvd. Both vehicles moved in a northeast direction and collided with a brick wall. The vehicles came to rest on the northeast sidewalk. The driver of the white Acura died at the scene. A male passenger in the white Acura and the driver of the Toyota 4-Runner, were transported by Los Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital. The passenger of the white Acura sustained major abrasions and lacerations. The driver of the Toyota 4-Runner sustained a broken right ankle and a broken left tibia.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the white Acura was involved in a speed contest with another driver. The driver of the black Acura, who was not involved in the collision, was placed under arrest for 192 (C) (1) PC, Gross Vehicular Manslaughter, and booked at Van Nuys Jail with the bail set at $ 50,000.00. The arrestee has been identified as twenty-one year old Rashi Mahmood from Granada Hills. This is an ongoing investigation.

The driver of the white Acura has been identified as 20 year-old Anthony Tai.

This press release was prepared by Officer Lucy Diaz, Media Relations Section.
