Fatal Hit and Run Traffic Collision

"Fatal Hit and Run Traffic Collision"

Los Angeles: On Monday July 7, 2003, at about 8:25 p.m., a fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian hit-and-run traffic collision occurred on Central Avenue just south of 84th Street.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was crossing mid-block at Central Avenue in a westbound direction, when he was struck by a van traveling south on Central Avenue. Witnesses stated the van did not stop and continued traveling southbound on Central Avenue. The van was last seen traveling westbound on Manchester Avenue. The driver of the van failed to stop at the scene of a traffic collision and identify himself as required by State Law.

The victim was transported to Martin Luther King Hospital by Los Angeles City paramedics, where he later died due to his injuries.

South Traffic Division Detectives obtained security camera footage from a near by Taco Bell Restaurant located on the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Manchester Avenue. The security camera footage showed that the vehicle was an older model tan van conversion with a brown stripe running the length of the vehicle.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Anyone with any information regarding this crime is urged to contact South Traffic Detectives at 323-290-6063, or the South Traffic Watch Commander at 213-485-7336.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer John Moreno, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
