Drive-by Shooting Leaves Young Victim Dead

Los Angeles: On Friday, June 21, 2002, at approximately 4:00 P.M., Hollenbeck uniformed officers responded to the scene of a shooting at the 2600 block of Gleason Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed a young female victim in front of 2619 Gleason Avenue, injured as a result of a gunshot wound.

The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the victim to USC Medical Center. She failed to respond to emergency medical treatment and died as a result of her injury.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was standing in the street when unknown suspects approached her in a tan colored Cadillac. The front passenger in that vehicle, armed with a handgun, fired one round, striking the victim in the upper torso. The suspects sped away eastbound Gleason Avenue.

The victim has been identified as 16 year-old, Nancy Jauregui. The motive for this attack is under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Hollenbeck Homicide Detectives T. Herman and P. Austin are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information that may assist in this investigation is urged to call Hollenbeck Detectives at 213-526-3112. On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk, 1-877-LAWFULL.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Eduardo Funes, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
