Southeast Vice Unit Conducts Operation Shoulder Tap

"Southeast Vice Unit Conducts Operation Shoulder Tap"

Los Angeles: On June 25, 2002, the Southeast Area Vice Unit conducted a Minor Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation. These operations are aimed at preventing and deterring the furnishing of alcoholic beverages to minors at Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) licensed locations.

The vice unit utilized a nineteen-year-old female to solicit adults outside of two ABC licensed locations in the Southeast Area. Under the direct supervision of vice officers, the female approached twenty-seven individuals as they walked into the stores. Of those approached twenty-six, of them refused to assist the minor with her request. Some of these individuals cited personal reasons while others pointed out heavy police enforcement in the area.

One twenty-three year old suspect, who purchased the beer for the minor, was cited at scene and will be facing criminal charges for furnishing alcoholic beverages to a minor. This could result with a fine in excess of $1000.00 and twenty-four hours community service. This is part of the Safe and Sober Graduation program which has been conducted by the vice units of the Los Angeles Police Department during the month of June.

This program is an attempt to try to reduce the availability of alcohol for under aged individuals celebrating their graduation from local area high schools.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Eduardo Funes, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
