Suspect Points Loaded Gun at Officers after Trying to Escape NR11253rf

***UPDATE***

The officer involved in the OIS is Police Officer Bradley Nielson. He has been with the Los Angeles Police Department for 8 years and 11 months.

Los Angeles:
Los Angeles Police Department 77th Division patrol officers investigating an assault encountered an armed suspect who pointed a gun at them after trying to get away.

On June 1, 2011, shortly after 5:30 p.m., officers went to the 6200 block of 4th Avenue in connection with a radio call about a man who was suspected of committing an assault with a deadly weapon.  They were also informed that the suspect might be armed. At the location, they met briefly with a witness who directed the officers to a driveway in the 6300 block of 4th Avenue where suspect Maurice Miles, a 31-year-old Black male, was standing.

The officers attempted to detain and question Miles, but he suddenly ran from them and then pointed a loaded handgun at them on two separate occasions, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.  Miles continued to run away; so officers established a perimeter, and the suspect was eventually located and arrested in the perimeter with assistance from the Department’s K-9 Unit. Officers also recovered the suspect’s loaded revolver.

Miles was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released for canine-related injuries. No officers were injured during the incident, and neither the suspect nor the officers were hit by gunfire.

LAPD Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives are investigating the officer-involved shooting, and detectives from the Department’s 77th Division are conducting an assault- and burglary-related investigation of the incident.  Additionally, the FID Criminal Apprehension Team is investigating the suspect’s crime against the officers.
