Robbery Homicide Division Investigates a Murder-Suicide at UCLA NR16188ma

Westwood: On June 1st about 10:00 a.m. the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the UCLA campus for a reported shooting. First responders from the UCLA Police Department discovered two deceased males on the fourth floor of the Engineering IV Building. Professor William Klug was shot by the suspect, Mainak Sarkar, in an office area of the building. Sarkar then shot and killed himself.

LAPD Robbery Homicide Division responded and assumed investigative responsibility for the incident. Detectives found two handguns and multiple rounds of ammunition at the crime scene. Both the handguns were legally purchased in Minnesota. There was also a note which detectives believe Sarkar wrote which led detectives to Sarkar’s residence in Minnesota.

Authorities from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and local law enforcement in Minnesota served a search warrant at Sarkar’s residence and in the residence found a second note he had written. The second note listed three names on it; Klug’s name, a female’s name and the name of another professor at UCLA. A follow up was conducted by Brooklyn Park Police Department to a location they believed was the female’s residence. At the location they discovered a deceased female with a gunshot wound.

Detectives are searching for Sarkar’s vehicle, a gray, 2003, Nissan, Sentra, Minnesota license plate 720KTW.
