CB Community Police Academy for Young Adults

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Operations-Central Bureau Community Police Academy for Young Adults is a collaborative program between the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The Academy will provide students with an inside look at the LAPD, the LAUSD and various facets of law enforcement. During the Academy, students will be introduced to basic police operations which will include: Crime Prevention, Criminal Law, Juvenile Procedures, Internal Affairs and the discipline process, Patrol Procedures, Vice Activities, Detective Investigations, Drug Enforcement, Crime Scene Investigations, Traffic Enforcement and LAUSD police operations. Students will participate in a firearms safety demonstration, and take tours of the Jail, Juvenile Hall, and Scientific Investigation and Communications Divisions. Additionally, students will be introduced to community problem solving models and conflict resolution techniques.

PURPOSE

The Academy is designed to develop a partnership between the police, the LAUSD and the young adults in our community. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional law enforcement academy that will provide the students an opportunity to see police-related activities from the inside. The weekly sessions are not designed to certify the participant as a law enforcement officer, but will provide students with knowledge that will effectively prepare them for civilian or law enforcement related careers. In addition, the program will meet high school course requirements and will enable each student to earn two and one half high school credits.

GOAL

The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District seek to provide students with experiences designed to help them make informed career choices and formulate a strategy to ensure a successful future. The Academy will help provide our young adults with an alternative to drugs, gangs, and other social ills that plague the schools and communities of Los Angeles. It is our goal to help students become productive members of society and imbue them with a strong commitment to make a difference.

ACADEMY SCHEDULE

Classes generally will meet on Thursday afternoons from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Los Angeles Police Academy, 1880 North Academy Drive. Parking is available for the students. Students will receive a certificate of completion at a culmination ceremony at the end of the eight-week academy. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

TEAMWORK

Experienced police officers and school staff will teach the Academy classes. Students will have the opportunity to meet with the Commanding Officer, Operations-Central Bureau, and various members of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Student participation and commitment to the principles of public service are required. The LAUSD and participants’ parents must support and guide students through the Academy, as its successful completion will require the dedication of the student, the parent, the school and the community.

The Los Angeles Police Department hopes to provide a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in the community through the education provided by the Academy.
