Captain Thomas P. Brascia is the Commanding Officer of Topanga Area.
Captain Brascia was born and raised in the City of Los Angeles. In March of 1978, after serving three years in the United States Army, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department. While working for the LAPD, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the California State University at Los Angeles. He is also a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, sponsored by the California Department of Justice, and the West Point Leadership Program.
During his career, Captain Brascia has worked a variety of assignments. He was a patrol officer in the Rampart, 77th Street and Hollywood Areas. He worked as an undercover vice officer in Hollywood and as an "element member" of the Metropolitan Division. As an ancillary duty, he served as a member of the Underwater Dive Unit. In January of 1988, he was promoted to detective and worked at Central Area and Robbery-Homicide Division. He worked many high profile and complex investigations as he rose through the detective ranks. In October of 1999 he was selected as a Detective-III supervisor working Homicide Specials at RHD.
In July of 2002, Captain Brascia was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He was assigned to Pacific and then 77th Street Areas in the capacity of a Watch Commander. In June of 2004, he was selected for the newly formed Force Investigation Division where he served as the OIC of the Criminal Investigative Unit. In September of 2005, he was assigned as the Central Area Detective Commanding Officer until his promotion to the rank of captain.
He is a member of the California Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #1 and the California Homicide Investigator's Association. When he is not working, Captain Brascia enjoys numerous outdoor sports, especially water and snow skiing.
