Captain II Rigo Romero was born to Victoria and Jose Romero, on November 14, 1961, in the small province town of Los Reyes, in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. He is one of 18 children (10 boys and 8 girls). In 1967, the surviving 16 children and two parents decided to seek a better life in the United States. After having posted a $6,000.00 bond with the Federal Government, the family was given legal immigration status and arrived in Los Angeles California.
With-in a few months after arriving, Captain Romero, at the age of six, decided he would become a Los Angeles Police Officer. He was rescued by two Los Angeles Police Officers, after being lost for several hours in the streets of Los Angeles.
Captain Romero lived in the Rampart Area during his adolescent years and attended 10th Street School, Berendo Junior High School, and graduated from Belmont High School. He was accepted to San Diego State University, as a Freshman, and returned back to Los Angeles after one year due to financial hardships. He continued his education attending Los Angeles City College and transferred to California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, in 1985.
Captain Romero married his wife Maria G. Ruiz in August of 1985. They had four children, Gracy Natalie, Victoria Guadalupe, Gabriela and Alexa Anaiz. He continues to reside in Los Angeles with his Family. Captain Romero and his wife, Maria, have been married for twenty-two years.
Captain Romero was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department on June 19, 1989. He was promoted to a police officer III in April of 1993, and became the “Hispanic News Media Relations Officer” at Press Relations Section, in the Office of the Chief of Police. He was advance to the position of Senior Lead Officer in Pacific Division in April of 1995. He was promoted to the position of Sergeant in August of 1997, where he served a variety of assignments, which included Traffic, Community Relations, Internal Affairs, Rampart Task Force, and Special Operations Section of IAG.
In October of 2003, Captain Romero was promoted to Lieutenant and became the Watch Commander at Harbor Patrol Division. In February of 2005, he was re-assigned to 77th Street Detective Division as the Assistant Commanding Officer of detectives. Captain Romero was upgraded and transferred to Professional Standards Bureau as the Officer in Charge of three investigative sections, respectively. In October of 2006, he was re-assigned to Office of Operations, as the Executive Officer to the Director, Office of Operations. On May 1, 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the Patrol Commanding Officer, Special Operations Division.
Captain Romero is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He is a Graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute. Captain Romero was the President the Board of Directions, Los Angeles Police Relief Association and has served as a Board member for eleven years. He is a member of LA LEY, and FBINAA-California Chapter. He is an active PEER Counselor and has served so for thirteen years.
