Captain II Philip S. Fontanetta was born in New York, New York, in 1957. He was educated in the New York Area and received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York. After moving to California and joining the Los Angeles Police Department, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Chapman University. Moreover, Captain Fontanetta received certificates in Contemporary Management for the Police Administrator from San Jose State University and the Executive Management Program at the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration.
Captain Fontanetta completed the Professional Development Series at the Emergency Management Institute and Instructor Development at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During his 27-year tenure with the Department, he has received specialized emergency operations training from the Department of Homeland Security, California Specialized Training Institute, and the Center for Domestic Preparedness.
Being appointed to the Department in April 1980, Captain Fontanetta was promoted to detective in September 1986, sergeant in January 1989, and lieutenant in November 1997. As an officer and detective, he was assigned to Southwest Patrol and Narcotics Group. As a sergeant, his assignment included Wilshire Patrol and Internal Affairs Group. As a lieutenant, his assignments included Southeast Patrol, Professional Standards Bureau, and the Commanding Officer of Pacific Detective Division. Captain Fontanetta most recently served as the Officer in Charge of the Emergency Management Section, Emergency Operations Division.
