Captain II Paul Hernandez III was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1955. He moved to California in 1965 where he was raised in the City of Alhambra, California. He attended high school in Alhambra and college in Los Angeles County.
Captain Hernandez began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department in December 1973 as a Police Student Worker. He became a Police Officer in August 1976 and has patrolled the streets of Newton Area and Rampart Area. His career has exposed him to a variety of specialized assignments including an undercover operative in Narcotics Division, a gang suppression officer in Operations-Central Bureau CRASH, an element member of Metropolitan Division and a surveillance officer in the Metropolitan Division Target Team.
He was promoted to Sergeant in 1988, where he supervised officers of Newton Area and 77th Street Area. Captain Hernandez was assigned to a variety of specialized units such as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Newton Area CRASH Unit, the OIC of 77th Street Special Problems Unit, the Assistant OIC at 77th Street Vice Unit, a loan to the Internal Affairs Division Special Operations Section and the OIC of “Operation Lethal Weapon” a joint task force comprised of Los Angeles Police Officers, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Agents after the 1992 Civil Unrest. He completed his supervisory duties in the Review and Evaluation Section of Professional Standards Bureau as an Assistant OIC.
Captain Hernandez was promoted to Lieutenant in 2004 and was assigned to Southeast Area as a Watch Commander. His lieutenant experience included an assignment to Force Investigation Division as an OIC on both the Administrative Investigation and Criminal Investigation Sections.
In July 2008, Captain Hernandez was promoted to Captain and assigned his first command at Rampart Area Patrol Division.
Captain Hernandez has been a long time instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department and California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) teaching a Surveillance Techniques and Officer Involved Shooting Investigations course.
Captain Hernandez has been married for over thirty-one years to his wife Josefina and together they have raised two wonderful children Jacqueline and Paul IV.
