Captain III Steven S. Sambar was appointed to the Department in February 1985 and began his career at Harbor Area. Captain Sambar promoted to sergeant in March 1996, detective in April 1997, lieutenant in December 2004, and captain 2009. As an officer, his assignments have included Harbor and Van Nuys Patrol, and Metropolitan Division. As a detective his assignments were in Van Nuys and Detective Support Division. As a sergeant, his assignments were in Hollywood, Foothill, and Internal Affairs Division. After promoting to lieutenant he was assigned to West Valley Area Patrol, West Valley and Devonshire Gang Impact Teams, and West Valley Area Detective Division. Upon his promotion to captain, he was assigned to Topanga Area Patrol. In March 2010, he was reassigned to Major Crimes Division, Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau, where he now serves as the Commanding Officer. His current duties include oversight of Anti-Terrorism Intelligence, Criminal Investigations, Surveillance Support, Criminal Conspiracy, Transnational Organized Crime and Analysis Section.

Captain Sambar is also active in many professional organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Police Executive Research Forum, the Senior Management Institute for Police, and the Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units where he serves as the secretary and treasurer. In 2012, Captain Sambar completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Leadership in Counter-Terrorism (LinCT) Program.
Captain Sambar was born in Los Angeles and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He attended Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys and obtained an Associate of Arts Degree. In January 1983, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from California State University, Northridge.
Captain Sambar resides in Southern California with his wife and has two adult children. He enjoys the outdoors and fishing with his family in his spare time.
