Captain Brenda Crump grew up in Auburn, Michigan, which was a small town with little crime and protected by one police officer.  She was blessed with athletic ability and competed in track and field; soccer, volleyball, softball, and basketball that eventually earned her a full ride scholarship to Michigan State University (MSU).  Captain Crump attributes much of her leadership skills to her early involvement and experience in athletics.

Captain Brenda Crump graduated from MSU in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.  She turned down an offer to play professional basketball in Ireland in pursuit of her dream job as a police officer.  She worked for the San Diego Police Department for one and a half years prior to joining the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1988.  She married her best friend and two-time State Champion and All American wrestler, Gary Crump, whom she met at MSU and is currently working Major Crimes Division.

As an officer, Captain Crump was impressed by the professionalism, technology, and extremely talented officers she worked with in patrol and specialized divisions.  She gained valuable leadership skills as a sergeant working at Rampart Division,

Internal Affairs Group, Special Operations Section, and as the Commander’s Aide at Operations-Central Bureau (OCB).  Captain Crump was promoted to lieutenant and was a watch commander at North Hollywood Division and then was upgraded as the OCB Gang Coordinator.  She continued to develop her investigative skills while assigned as the Officer in Charge (OIC) at Internal Affairs Group, Criminal Investigation Division, South and Valley/West Sections, and then was selected as the OIC of the Defensive Tactics and Technology Section at Training Division.

Captain Crump is a graduate of the Law Enforcement Leadership Program, WestPoint Leadership Program, and the Executive Management Program from the Law Enforcement Leadership Institute.  She received the Police Meritorious Service Medal as a Board member of Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club for her work in promoting physical fitness and marksmanship throughout the Department.  Captain Crump competed over the years with the LAPD track and field, soccer, and basketball teams, Baker to Vegas, and in the Western States, Nevada, International and World Police and Fire Games.

In June 2009, it was a great honor to be promoted to Captain and assigned to Olympic Division.  Captain Crump is driven by the incredibly gifted and devoted sworn and civilian employees she has worked with and around and who have demonstrated and shared her passion for ethical leadership.  She is devoted to creating an environment for others to be innovative and creative and live each day with a sense of purpose to make the lives of others in the City and this organization better than the day before.  The love and support of her family, Gary and their four wonderful children, have been instrumental in Captain Crump’s amazing journey.
