Captain Melissa Zak was born in Torrance, California. She joined the Los Angeles Police Department in September 1992.  Captain Zak attended West High School, UC Santa Barbara, and California State University, Dominguez Hills.  She began her career at Hollywood Division and has worked a variety of patrol and administrative assignments throughout her career.  She promoted to Sergeant in 1998 and to Lieutenant in 2005. 

Most recently, she has served as the Adjutant for the Operations-Valley Bureau Commanding Officer.  Captain Zak received the Meritorious Unit Citation for her involvement with the Democratic National Convention Planning Group.  Additionally, she is a member of the National and California FBI National Academy, completing the FBI National Academy in September 2009.  Captain Zak is married and raises her children in the San Fernando Valley.
