Captain Martin A. Baeza was born in Merida, Yucatan Mexico and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of two settling in the Los Angeles area. He grew up in the Northeast and Rampart areas of Los Angeles and graduated from Pater Noster High School in Glassell Park in 1984. He attended East Los Angeles College and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Azusa Pacific University earning a Bachelors Degree in Applied Business and Management and a Masters Degree in Organizational Management.
He first joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1989 fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a Los Angeles Police Officer. As a police officer he worked a variety assignments and Divisions, including Hollenbeck Division, North Hollywood Division and Northeast Division. His experience included patrol, gang enforcement, special problems unit, foot beat, vice and detective trainee. In 1996 he was promoted to the rank of Detective where he was assigned to work Commission Investigation Division and was eventually selected to work Organized Crime and Vice Division investigating organized crime families (mafias), enterprises and groups. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2000 and assigned to work Van Nuys Division as a field supervisor and Adjutant to the Area Commanding Officer. He was subsequently selected to work Internal Affairs Group where he was assigned as an investigator in the South Bureau Section. Upon completion of his tour in Internal Affairs, he transferred to Training Group where he became the Aide to the Director of Police Training and Education and was eventually selected to be an Aide for an Assistant Chief, Director, Office of Support Services. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and worked as the Watch Commander and then as the Officer in Charge of the Crime Reduction Operations Center Unit in the Northeast Division which responsibilities included developing crime reduction strategies. In 2008, he was upgraded to Adjutant for the Deputy Chief assigned as the Commanding Officer of Operations-West Bureau. Prior to his assignment as the Commanding Officer of the West Los Angeles Patrol Division,he was assigned as the Adjutant for the Deputy Chief, Commanding Officer of Personnel and Training Bureau.
At some level, he has worked in all Operation Bureaus. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, the West Point Leadership Program, the Commission on Peace Officer Standards of Training Management Course and the Los Angeles Police Department Command Development Course. He is a member of several law enforcement associations including the Latin American Law Enforcement Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is married to his wife Michelle and together they have two daughters.On his personal time, his interests include spending quality time with family, cycling, golfing and traveling.
