After graduating as a Police Officer in 1982, he held assignments at Foothill, Communications, Rampart, Van Nuys, Hollywood Patrol and Hollywood Vice.  Captain Carmona worked as a patrol sergeant at Foothill Division, and as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Foothill Gang Enforcement Detail, in addition, he worked as a field sergeant at Pacific and Mission Patrol Divisions.
