Captain I David T. Grimes was born in Northern California and grew up in a small town with a population of less than 700 people.  He came to Southern California in 1985 to attend the University of California, at Los Angeles, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.  Prior to becoming a police officer, Captain Grimes worked in a hospital as an Exercise Physiologist/Cardiac Rehabilitation Therapist.

Desiring to serve in law enforcement, Captain Grimes began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department in October of 1994.  He spent his first five years of police work in Operations-Valley Bureau (OVB) assigned to Foothill and North Hollywood Divisions.  While in the police officer rank he worked as a Patrol Officer, a Special Problems Unit Officer, a Bicycle Patrol Officer and a Field Training Officer.  After promoting to the rank of Sergeant in June of 2000, Captain Grimes worked in West Los Angeles Area as a Patrol Supervisor, a Complaint Investigator, an Area Adjutant and a Training Coordinator.  During these years, Captain Grimes was honored to teach several in-service training classes for the Department including Basic Supervisor School and Watch Commander School.  Captain Grimes transferred to Internal Affairs Group in 2003 and completed a two year investigative tour.  In 2004 Captain Grimes attended and graduated from the West Point Leadership Course.  In 2005, Captain Grimes returned to OVB as an Assistant Watch Commander for the West Valley Patrol Division.  In 2007, he promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and went back to West Los Angeles Area as a Watch Commander.  In the summer of 2008, Captain Grimes was selected to assist in the creation of the Department’s 20th geographic division, Olympic Station.  When Olympic opened in 2009, Captain Grimes was the first Gang Impact Team Officer-In-Charge for the newly created division.  In September of 2011, Captain Grimes became the Adjutant for Operations-West Bureau (OWB) and assisted with the management and leadership of the Bureau Sexual Assault Detail, the Surveillance Unit and the OWB Violent Crime Task Force.  Captain Grimes also assisted with the creation of OWB Homicide.  He promoted to the rank of Captain in June of 2013 and became the Commanding Officer of the West Valley Patrol Division.

Captain Grimes has been married to his bride for 24 years and is the proud father of three girls.  He is active in his church and enjoys fishing, golf and traveling with his family.
