Captain II Brian Thomas was born in Montebello California and was raised in the City of Cerritos. After graduating from Cerritos High School, Brian attended Cypress Community College and Arizona State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Business. In 2005, Brian earned his Master’s Degree in Emergency Management Services from the California State University, Long Beach.
Internal Affairs Criminal Investigation Division
Brian’s desire to be a police officer was instilled in him at an early age. His father, Randy Thomas, worked 40 years for the Montebello Police Department, retiring as a detective. This early exposure to law enforcement had a significant impact on Brian and his commitment to serve the community.
In 1995, Brian joined the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon graduating from the Police Academy, Brian was assigned to 77th Street Division and Newton Street Division where he worked patrol, CRASH, the robbery detail and as a Field Training Officer. In 2003, Brian was promoted to sergeant where he was assigned to 77th Street Division, Rampart Division, Internal Affairs Group, and Operations-West Bureau. In 2008, Brian was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to Northeast Division as the Watch Commander, Administrative Lieutenant, and Acting Detective Commanding Officer. In 2012, Brian was promoted to a Lieutenant II at Planning and Research Division where he was in charge of the Procedures and Directives Section. In September 2013, Brian was promoted to Captain of Police and was assigned to West Los Angeles Patrol Division. Captain Thomas promoted to Captain II on October 5, 2014 and is currently the Commanding Officer, Criminal Investigation Division, Internal Affairs Group.
Brian is married to LAPD Captain Jennifer Thomas and together they have two children, Daniel and Elizabeth. Daniel recently completed his five year commitment to the United States Marine Corps and Elizabeth is a student at the University of California, Irvine. Brian enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, camping, fishing, and hiking.
