Captain Sharyn Buck joined the Los Angeles Police Department in March 1983 and currently holds the rank of Captain III. She has spent the past twenty-five years rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department, promoting to Captain in 2000. Captain Buck has worked a cross-section of Operational, Investigative and Command assignments. Her unique background, expertise and interactive leadership style have led her to achieve ultimate success in supporting the residents, business, community organizations and officers of the Los Angeles Police Department.
In her current assignment as the Commanding Officer, North Hollywood Area, she serves the communities of North Hollywood, Studio City, Valley Village, Toluca Lake, West Toluca Lake and a portion of Sun Valley. There are approximately 300 sworn officers, detectives and civilian staff assigned to the North Hollywood Police Station covering approximately 25 square miles and home to over 220,000 residents. Her major priority is the reduction of crime, and vows to make North Hollywood Area the safest division within the San Fernando Valley.
Prior to being assigned to North Hollywood Area, Captain Buck was the Commanding Officer of Communications Division, which includes both the Metropolitan and Valley Dispatch Centers. She was responsible for the Los Angeles Police Department’s 9-1-1 and police dispatch systems, which are the largest public safety answering points in the State of California. During her tenure at Communications Division, the largest division within the Los Angeles Police Department, she directed the efforts of over 600 sworn and civilian employees who handled thousands of emergency calls per day.
As the Commanding Officer, Juvenile Division, Captain Buck was responsible for over 150 sworn and civilian personnel with oversight of all criminal investigations within the Abused Child Unit, Sexually Exploited Children’s Unit and Juvenile Narcotics Section. She also exercised functional supervision over the Department’s Youth programs citywide and performed as a liaison with local, state and national officials regarding juvenile issues.
As the Commanding Officer, Newton Operations Support Division, Captain Buck was responsible for the management and leadership of all criminal investigative proceedings, as well as the Vice, Career Criminal and Gang Enforcement units.
Captain Buck has held many exciting and challenging assignments, including, patrol, Assistant Advocate in Internal Affairs Group, Commander’s Aide, Watch Commander and the Officer in Charge of Media Relations Section. She was also the first female Lieutenant ever assigned to Hollenbeck Area.
Prior to joining the Department, Captain Buck earned her Bachelor of Arts decree in Broadcast Journalism from California State University, Northridge and in 1997, while assigned as an Assistant Advocate in Internal Affairs Group, she earned her Masters Degree in Negotiation Tactics, Conflict Management from California State University, Dominquez Hills.
Captain Buck has attended a number of specialized training programs and leadership schools including, the California Supervisory Leadership Institute, LAPD’s West Point Leadership Program and the Senior Management Institute for Police, a prestigious summer executive development course taught primarily by professor’s from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
Captain Buck is an innovative and versatile professional who works with others to meet and exceed organizational goals and objectives. She is a firm believer that teamwork plays a big role in achieving success.
Captain Buck is a member of numerous law enforcement related organizations and is actively involved in many charitable organizations, including the City of Hope. She has strong family support from her husband (retired LAPD), twin brother, older brother, and stepson who are all currently Los Angeles Police Officers. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, reading and playing golf.
