Commander James H. Cansler graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Behavioral Science from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Commander Cansler became a Los Angeles Police Officer in December 1980. He has worked a variety of assignments in patrol, detectives and administration. In 1983, he received the Police Star for bravery while assigned to Hollywood Patrol Division.
In July 1999, he was promoted to the Rank of Captain and was assigned to command West Valley Operations Support Division. In December 2000, he was promoted again to Area Captain in charge of West Valley Area. In April 2005, he assumed command of Planning and Research Division until his promotion to commander in June 2007. Commander Cansler is currently assigned as the Commanding Officer of Personnel Group.
