Captain Clay Farrell was appointed to the Department in 1977 and was assigned to a variety of patrol and vice assignments. Captain Farrell was appointed to the rank of Lieutenant in 1991 and was assigned to Southwest and Harbor Areas before assuming the position of a Detective Lieutenant at Newton Area. In 1998, Captain Farrell transferred to Robbery-Homicide Division and oversaw investigations relating to homicides and assaults upon officers. Captain Farrell was promoted to the rank of Captain in December 2002.

Captain Farrell previously was assigned to Hollywood Area.
Hollywood Area consists of 17.2 square miles and has a population of approximately 300,000 residents. The area is a significant contributor to the business, entertainment and cultural activities of the Southern California area. While assigned to the Hollywood Area, Captain Farrell was committed to serving the diverse communities of Hollywood Area.

Captain Farrell is married to a Los Angeles Police Department detective and they have one son of elementary school age who wishes to become an astronaut or a major league Baseball player.
