Captain III Jodi Wakefield joined the Los Angeles Police Department on December 12, 1983. She has worked a variety of assignments throughout her career, beginning as a probationary officer in Devonshire Division patrol.  From there she went to Communications Division, then 77th Street Division patrol, to the West Los Angeles Division Special Problems Unit, and was assigned as the Vice Coordinator for both Operations Valley Bureau and Operations West Bureau.  She also worked as a staff researcher for the Deputy Chief of Operations West Bureau.

When she promoted to Detective in 1995, she was assigned as a detective trainee on the Major Assault Crimes and Auto tables.  From there she was assigned to Valley Traffic Division’s Collision Investigation Follow-up Unit.  Upon promotion to Sergeant in 1996, she was assigned as the OIC of the Hollywood Bicycle Unit, where the unit worked the Hollywood “Cruiser Task Force.”  From Hollywood Division, she returned to patrol as a field Sergeant in Van Nuys Division, then as the Van Nuys Patrol Captain’s adjutant.  Shortly thereafter, she promoted to Sergeant II and was the Commander’s Aide for Valley Bureau.

In 1999, when she promoted to Lieutenant I, she was assigned as the Watch Commander at Van Nuys Division.  After promoting to Lieutenant II, she worked as the Sworn Hiring Coordinator for the Department, representing the Chief of Police to improve the hiring process.  From there, she worked as the OIC of Recruitment and Background Investigations, and the OIC of the Employee Relations Group under the Chief of Police.

In 2005, Wakefield was promoted to Captain I and was assigned as the Patrol Commanding Officer for Central Patrol Division.  In 2007, she was promoted as the Area Commanding Officer for Central Division.  During her time at Central Division, she successfully navigated the Skid Row “Safer Cities Initiative,” the 2008 Lakers Championship Series, and oversaw the opening of the multi-billion dollar entertainment destination, “L.A. Live.”

In February 2009, Captain III Wakefield was assigned as the Commanding Officer of both Audit Division and Civil Rights Integrity Division, which were later combined into Internal Audits and Inspections Division (IAID).  In July 2009, it was announced that the Federal Consent Decree that the Department had been under for eight years had been lifted.

On a personal note, Captain III Wakefield was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley.  She graduated from Canoga Park High School and attended UCLA, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.  In addition, she graduated from the West Point Leadership Course provided by the Department and is a 2009 graduate of the Southern California Leadership Network.  She is a member of the Los Angeles Women’s Police Officers Association and the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives.

She is also the mother of two teenage children, Katlin and James.
