Director of Police Transportation Neil Olson is the Commanding Officer of the Los Angles Police Departments Motor Transport Division. He oversees the Departments transportation division and is responsible for providing the safest and most advanced law enforcement fleet at an industry competitive cost. In his role as the director, Mr. Olson is responsible for the budgeting and purchasing of needed vehicles and related equipment; design and fabrication of specialized equipment; all areas of fleet maintenance and repair; product testing and vehicle modifications; salvaging of damaged or obsolete vehicles and equipment; and the maintenance of all fleet records.
Mr. Olson began his career with the Department in 1972 and includes a variety of assignments in various technical, supervisory and management positions. He worked technical positions that included repairing, modifying, designing, and fabricating police and specialty vehicles and equipment. He supervised various shops including mechanical and body repair, vehicle production, and component rebuilding. His management positions included directing multiple shops and projects. In 2004 he was appointed to the position of Director of Police Transportation, Commanding Officer Motor Transport Division.
He majored in Computer Engineering and Business Administration at Pierce College and Masters College. He is a member of Ford's National Police Advisory Board, has instructed promotional seminars for civilian employees, taught commercial driving classes for officers and has represented the Department in vehicular manslaughter and fraud cases. When Mr. Olson finds spare time, he enjoys travel, fine food, a good movie, and an occasional basketball game with his son.
