LAPD Soccer Assists Local Boxer with His Fight with Cancer
On February 22, 2009, the LAPD Soccer Team played an exhibition soccer game with Channel 52, Telemundo. The purpose of the game was to act as a fund raiser to aid East Los Angeles Boxer Chicanito Hernandez. Chicanito was diagnosed with life threatening cancer several months ago and does not have sufficient funds for treatments.
The game site was East Los Angeles College. While this was a friendly exhibition game for a great cause, both teams played hard and demonstrated a will to win. The Telemundo Team struck the first goal early in the first half. Telemundo maintained the lead until early into the second half when LAPD tied. In the following 15 minutes, both teams struggled to hold the ball. Telemundo then scored a second goal, giving them the lead 2-1. LAPD fought hard in the latter minutes of the game, continually pushing forward. This eventually paid off as LAPD struck their second goal, again tying the game. As the clock wound down, the game ended in a tie 2-2.
We wish to thank Telemundo for inviting the LAPD Soccer squad to participate in this worthy cause. The stadium was filled with in excess of 300 spectators that all contributed to Chicanito’s cause.
