Officer Involved Shooting

Los Angeles - On Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Newton Area Community Law Enforcement and Recovery (CLEAR) officers, Isaac Galloway, (31 years of age, 9 years with the Department) and Miguel Contrerras, (31 years of age, 5 years with the Department) were patrolling Gilbert Lindsey Park, located on 42nd Place between Avalon Boulevard and San Pedro Street, a local gang hangout. The officers observed a group of individuals in the parking lot. As they drove closer, one individual, subsequently identified as Darryl Stringer, 24 years of age, a resident of Los Angeles, began walking East away from the group. The officers observed Stringer place his hand on the butt of a handgun that was visible in his front waistband. The officers ordered Stringer to stop. Stringer withdrew the handgun from his waistband and began running Westbound towards the basketball courts. Officers then pursued Stringer on foot.

Upon reaching the basketball courts, Stringer began shooting at the officers. The officers in fear for their safety returned fire. Stringer continued running Westbound. The officers ordered Stringer to drop the gun and lay on the ground. Stringer threw the handgun to the ground, ran a few more yards, then laid down in front of 462 E. 42nd Place, where he was taken into custody.

Investigation at the scene revealed that Stringer had been wounded in the leg. Los Angeles City Fire Department Paramedics responded and transported Stringer to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, where he was treated for a gunshot wound and listed in stable condition.

Stringer was booked at the Jail Ward for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer. Neither officer was injured. Stringer’s handgun was recovered at scene.

Robbery-Homicide Division is conducting the investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
