Bank Robbery Foiled By Alert Security Guard

Los Angeles: On March 29, 2001, at approximately 2:50 p.m., four suspects exited a van at the Washington Mutual Bank located at 1550 Westwood Boulevard in West Los Angeles. The suspects approached the bank wearing jackets and ski caps. A security guard and a citizen observed the suspects pull down their caps and put gloves on as they approached. The guard then locked the door and advised the suspects the bank was closed. The suspects then returned to a waiting van, which was occupied by two additional suspects, and left the location.

A West Los Angeles Area Detective approached the bank and was notified of the suspect activity and description. The detective followed the suspects and requested back up units. The responding units stopped the van and detained the six occupants.

Robbery-Homicide Division, Bank Section, conducted the follow-up investigation and booked five male adults and one male juvenile for attempt robbery.

A follow-up investigation revealed the same suspects, just 40 minutes prior to their attempt robbery and subsequent arrest, had made the same attempt at a First Bank and Trust located at 9145 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. That attempt robbery also was foiled by an alert security guard observing the approaching suspects and locking the bank’s door before they could enter.

Robbery-Homicide Divisions Bank Section, has booked a total of 11 suspects within the past 72 hours. These suspects deny any affiliation but there are similarities in area of residence and method of operation.

The suspects have been identified as follows:

  1. Mayberry, Donald Joseph 22 years Inglewood
  2. Mayberry, Nathaniel Lee 18 years Inglewood
  3. Miller, Damon Lewis 22 years Los Angeles
  4. Juvenile 14 years Los Angeles
  5. Wylie, Maurice 19 years Los Angeles
  6. Terrell, Saul 18 years Los Angeles

This investigation is being conducted by Robbery-Homicide Division under the direction of Lt Jim Grayson, 213-485-2511.

This press release was prepared by Sergeant John Pasquariello, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
