Drive-By Shooting Kills One; Two Others Wounded

Los Angeles- Rampart Homicide Detectives are investigating the death of 29 year-old Luis Alfred Rodriguez.

On February 26, 2004, at about 11:40 p.m., Rampart Patrol Officers responded to the 2500 block of West 8th Street. When the officers arrived, they observed Rodriguez seated inside a parked vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. The Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded and pronounced Rodriguez dead at scene.

The investigation revealed that several male Hispanics were vandalizing the walls at Coronado Street and 8th Street. Witnesses said several male suspects drove-up and confronted the group. The vandalism suspects began running eastbound on 8th street at which time, unknown suspects standing on the northside of the street, began shooting at the vandals.

Simultaneously, a second victim was driving his vehicle westbound on 8th Street when his car was fired upon. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso and he continued to drive several blocks where he summoned emergency personnel for help. He was transported to USC Medical Center where he was admitted and is listed in stable condition. His identity is being withheld pending the notification to his family.

During the course of the investigation, a third victim was located several blocks from the shooting. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was identified as being involved with the original vandalism. He sustained a superficial wound to his leg and was treated for his injury. He has been questioned and released.

The suspects responsible for this crime have not been identified and the motive for this shooting is believed to be gang related.
