Parolee in Custody for Hot Prowl Burglaries Ankle Monitoring Device Leads Directly to Him NR12128kr

Los Angeles:  West Valley Patrol Officers took advantage of a modern technology to a track and arrest a suspect wanted in two residential burglaries that occurred while residents where home.

Both burglaries occurred in Sherman Oaks on October 24, 2011.  The first occurred at around 9 p.m., in the 15400 block of Huston Street.  The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Perry Pemberton of Los Angeles, acting alone or with an accomplice, entered the residence while the victim was asleep in one of the bedrooms.  It wasn’t until a family member returned home later and found several rooms ransacked and items of jewelry missing, that they realized their home had been burglarized.

During the second burglary at around 10 p.m., in the 15600 Royal Woods, Pemberton acting alone or with an accomplice, forcibly opened a sliding glass door, but was confronted by the victim shortly after entering.  Pemberton shined a flashlight in the victim’s eyes to cause momentary blindness and ran from the home.

During the investigation officers utilized a relatively new computer system called Vericheck, from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The system is used to monitor ankle bracelets attached to dangerous, high risk criminals on parole, using a GPS tracking system.   It is capable of pinpointing a person’s position within 15 meters; and maintains the movement of a single individual for an entire year. The system confirmed that Pemberton had been inside both residences at the time of the crimes.

The same system was subsequently used on October 25, 2011 and directed officers to the 12600 block of Western Avenue in the city of Hawthorne where Pemberton was playing football.  He was taken into custody without incident at 2 p.m. he was later released after posting $500,000 bail.

Pemberton was in the company of another parolee, 29-year old Andrew Stevens of Gardena.  He was arrested for a violation of his parole and later released. He has since been arrested for receiving stolen property in an unrelated case.

At the time of Pemberton’s arrest items of jewelry were recovered from his luxury car that linked him to burglaries committed in Santa Clarita and Burbank.  Further checks of the Vericheck Monitoring System tied Pemberton to additional burglaries in Woodland Hills and Bel Air.

On December 29, 2011, the District Attorney’s office filed six counts of burglary against Pemberton.   Pemberton had been wearing the ankle monitor after convictions for violent felonies in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. He is a documented gang member and investigators believe he had one or more accomplice when committing these six burglaries.

Anyone with information about these crimes, other crimes Pemberton may be associated with, or information on other possible suspects is asked to contact West Valley Detectives, Detective William Dunn at 818-374-7769.
