LAPD’s Police Data Initiative Featured at The SXSW Interactive Festival NR16100dm

Austin, Texas: The 23rd Annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival returned to Austin.

In May 2015, President Obama announced the launch of the White House Police Data Initiative, working with 24 police departments to leverage data on citizen interactions with police (e.g., crime, arrests, vehicle/pedestrian stops). The goal is to increase transparency and accountability, build community trust, and enable innovation. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was one of the first police departments across the country to volunteer to participate in the initiative and took the lead at the law enforcement level.

LAPD's Chief Information Officer Maggie Goodrich spoke at SXSW today at the invitation of the White House. Ms. Goodrich spoke on a panel regarding the White House Police Data Initiative (PDI). LAPD has made great strides, over the past two years, in making its data available to the public and in using advanced analytics to improve community relations.

Ms. Goodrich also addressed how technologists, academics and law enforcement agencies can work together to achieve common goals. Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Goodrich was responsible for the development and implementation of all LAPD risk management systems, including the officer early intervention system, mandated by a Federal Consent Decree between the City of Los Angeles and the U.S. Department of Justice.

This year's event took place from Friday, March 11 and ran through Tuesday, March 15. Cutting-edge technologies and digital creativity were discussed. The event featured five days of compelling presentations and panels from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders and an unbeatable lineup of special programs showcasing the best new websites, video games and startup ideas the community has to offer. From hands-on training to big picture analysis of the future, SXSW Interactive has become the place to discover the technology of tomorrow, today.
