Gang Shooting Claims 21-Year-Old Victim

Los Angeles - On Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at approximately 12:35 p.m., Newton Area patrol officers responded to an ambulance shooting radio call in the 1100 block of East 57th Street. Upon their arrival, they observed the victim, a male, Black, 21 years of age, later identified as Andre Woods, laying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso area. The Los Angeles Fire Department's Rescue Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the victim to USC Medical Center, where he failed to respond to treatment and was pronounced dead at 1:42 p.m.

It appears the victim was involved in a physical altercation with the suspects. One of the suspects pulled a handgun and shot the victim once in the torso. The suspects fled on bikes eastbound towards Central Avenue. The shooting appears to be gang related. At the time of this release, the suspects are still outstanding.

Newton Operations Support Division homicide detectives are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information that may assist in this investigation is urged to contact the detectives at 323-846 6547.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Jason Lee, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
