Los Angeles: On Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at approximately 10:30 P.M., the Simi Valley Police Department was engaged in a vehicle pursuit of an armed robbery suspect. The pursuit traveled from Simi Valley to the Sylmar area then to the Glendale area and returned to the Sylmar area where the pursuit terminated in the 13800 block of Garrick Avenue. Prior to the pursuit’s termination, the Simi Valley Police Department officers requested that the LAPD take over control of the pursuit because they were now traveling on unfamiliar streets.

As LAPD units pursued the suspect in the 13800 block of Garrick Avenue in Sylmar, the suspect suddenly exited his moving vehicle armed with a sawed off rifle. As the suspect ran from his vehicle he fired his weapon at the officers; two LAPD officers returned fire wounding the suspect. The wounded suspect was able to make entry into a house. Fearing that the suspect might take people within the house hostage, LAPD officers immediately formulated a plan for quick entry into the residence. Within minutes, several officers entered the residence and took the suspect into custody without further incident. The officers found several people inside the residence unharmed.

The suspect, identified as Jake Chisholm, 19 years of age, received minor gunshot wounds to his right leg and buttocks. He was treated and released from a local hospital and transported to Van Nuys Area Jail where he was booked for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer. His bail has been set at $1,075,000. No officers or other victims were injured during this incident.

After further investigation it was learned that Chisholm had carjacked an adult male, identified as Francesco Montoya, 29 years of age, resident of Glendale, and a seven year old boy in the 9300 block of Hillrose Street in Sunland. Chisholm forced Montoya to drive the three of them to Simi Valley. While in Simi Valley, Chisholm committed an armed robbery at a local liquor store. The two victims remained in the vehicle because of threats of violence by Chisholm if they attempted to flee. Chisholm then forced Montoya to drive them from Simi Valley back to the Los Angeles Area. Simi Valley Police Department officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle and began to pursue it eastbound on the 118 Freeway. In the Glendale area, Chisholm released the two kidnap/carjacking victims then drove the victim’s vehicle away. Shortly thereafter, Simi Valley officers reengaged their pursuit of the suspect who led them to Sylmar and assistance from LAPD personnel.

Robbery Homicide Division is conducting the criminal investigation and Critical Incident Investigation Division is conducting the administrative investigation regarding the officer involved shooting.
