Three-year-old Victim is Killed by Stray bullet

"Three-year-old Victim is Killed by Stray bullet"

Los Angeles: On Thursday, May 9, 2002, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Van Nuys Patrol Officers responded to a Radio Call "ADW Ambulance En-Route Shots Fired" at the 14700 block of Blythe Street.

While the Officers conducted the preliminary investigation at the scene of the shooting they received additional information to respond to Valley Presbyterian Hospital, where a victim of that shooting was being treated.

The follow-up investigation at the hospital revealed that the victim, who is identified as Alfredo Cardenas Jr., three years of age, sustained gunshot wound to his upper torso. The victim had been standing in front of an apartment complex located on the 14700 block of Blythe Street when he was struck by a stray bullet. He was transported to the hospital by his father. Alfredo Cardenas Jr. failed to respond to treatment and was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

Homicide detectives from Van Nuys Operations Support Division assumed responsibility for the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Van Nuys Homicide Unit at 818-756-8377. On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk, 1-877-LAWFULL.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Eduardo Funes, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
