Officer-Involved Shooting with Gunmen

August 4, 2006

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and wounded a gunman on Thursday evening, August 3, 2006, at 9:00 PM.

Rampart Narcotics Enforcement Detail officers were conducting a narcotics investigation in the 600 block of North Silverlake Boulevard when they saw 3 suspects engaged in what appeared to be a narcotics transaction.  The suspects walked away and out of view of the officers.  A few minutes later, 2 of the 3 suspects, later identified as Martin Gray, 20, and Alfonso Quiroz, 19, returned and were observed tagging a light standard.  The narcotics officers requested a uniformed patrol unit to respond to assist in the investigation.

Rampart patrol officers Shane Bua, 35, and Jorge Diaz, 32, both with six years of experience with the Department, responded and stopped the suspects in the 700 block of Vendome Street.  Gray and Quiroz fled on foot and the officers gave chase.  Gray pulled a handgun from his waistband and turned toward the pursuing officers.  An officer involved shooting occurred, and Gray was struck by gunfire.  Gray fell to the ground and dropped a handgun.  He was taken into custody without further incident.  Quiroz was also taken into custody and a handgun was recovered from him.

Both handguns recovered from the suspects were 9mm semi-automatics.

Gray received a grazing shot to his front teeth.  He was treated at the scene and was taken to Jail Division for booking for Attempt Murder on a Police Officer.  Quiroz had an outstanding $2 million warrant from Palmdale Sheriffs for Attempt Murder.

Force Investigation Division is conducting the investigation.  For further information contact Media Relations Section at 213-485-3586.
