Hyde Park: Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division (FID) is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in a Hyde Park neighborhood on Tuesday evening.

On May 16, 2017, around 9:45 p.m., Metropolitan Division was assigned to crime suppression in 77th Area. While on crime suppression patrol in the 3300 block of West 63rd Street in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles, Metropolitan Officers attempted to detain suspect Henry Gilbert for drinking in public. Gilbert ran from the officers, drew a pistol from his waistband, and pointed it at the officers which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

Suspect Gilbert was wounded and taken into custody without further incident. Gilbert was transported to local hospital, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound. No officers were injured as a result of this incident.

Suspect Gilbert’s loaded firearm was recovered at the scene of the OIS.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. The Office of the Inspector General and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office had a representative at the scene. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
