Valley Traffic Sobriety Checkpoint

July 4, 2008

What:
Sobriety Checkpoint

When:
Friday, July 11 , 2008
6:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Where:
The City of Canoga Park, on Sherman Way between Desoto and Canoga Ave.
Who:
Valley Traffic Division
Why:
The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions related to intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions. During the past year, the City of Canoga Park, and West Hills has endured over 126 collisions involving an intoxicated driver. In addition, as of June 6, 2008, there have been over 957 "Hit and Run" traffic collisions in the West Valley Area. The checkpoint will serve as a reminder to the San Fernando Valley Community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: if we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.
These checkpoints hope to enhance public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the law concerning driving without a driver’s license.
Motorists approaching a checkpoint will see information advising them that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained a few moments while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.
The California Office of Traffic Safety will fund the checkpoint.
