Car To Car Shooting Leaves One Critically Wounded; Motive Unknown

Los Angeles: On Sunday, September 29, 2002, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Dana Benson Sherman, a 32 year old resident of Escondido, was with two friends in a vehicle. They were driving northbound on Canoga Avenue near Burbank Boulevard in Woodland Hills. The three had just left a nightclub in Hollywood and were enroute to a friends house when they stopped at a traffic signal. A vehicle stopped next to theirs, also northbound, and the passengers began shooting at Mr. Sherman and his friends for reasons unknown at this time. The suspect vehicle sped off northbound from the location. Critically wounded, Mr. Sherman was able to drive to a nearby payphone and call 9-1-1.

Mr Sherman was transported to Kaiser Hospital where he was admitted with a gunshot wound to his chest. He is listed in gravely critical condition and is not expected to survive. A second occupant of the vehicle was also transported to Kaiser Hospital with a gunshot wound to both legs and is listed in stable condition. The third occupant was not injured.

The Suspect's vehicle is described as a 2002 or 2003 Cadillac Escalade EXT, an SUV with a small truck bed, and chrome 20" custom rims. The suspects are described as two African-American males and a male Hispanic. The weapons are thought to be large caliber handguns and have not been recovered.

West Valley Homicide Detectives are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call 818-756-8546 during business hours. A 24-hour toll free number is available, 1-877-529-3855, and can be used if needed.

This press release was prepared by Officer Don Cox, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
