$50,000 Reward Offered

What:
News Conference to announce a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the suspect wanted in the death of Karina Michel.

When:
Friday, June 1, 2007
11:00 a.m.

Where:
Newton Area Community Police Station
3400 S. Central Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90011

Who:
Councilmember Jan Perry, Council District 9
Captain Denis Cremins, Commanding Officer, Newton Division
Detectives Eric Spear and Richard Arciniega, Lead Investigators
Family of the Victim

Why:
On Tuesday May 29, 2007, at 8:20 p.m., officers from Newton Division responded to a radio call of an ambulance shooting at 62nd Street and Main Street. When they arrived, they saw 31 year old Karina Michel lying between two cars suffering from a gunshot wound.

Michel and her common-law husband parked their car in the parking lot of a local eatery. Michel left her two children ages 5 and 12 in their car as they went to order food. When Michel walked back to her waiting children, she was approached by a male Black, approximately 18-25 years old, who was armed with a handgun.

The evidence suggests that the suspect attempted to rob Michel for her purse and during the struggle shot Michel, killing her.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Newton Homicide Detectives Eric Spear or Richard Arciniega at 323-846-6566. On weekends and during off-hours, phone the 24-hour toll free Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).
