Law Enforcement in Custody Death in Newton NR14304jkLos Angeles: On August 3, 2014, at around 9:30 a.m., Newton Area Patrol officers were flagged down by a community member and informed them that a male at a bus stop in the area of Central Avenue and Olympic Boulevard was running in and out of traffic.
As the officers approached the area, they observed two males escorting the male off a stopped MTA bus. Based on the male’s behaviors and the information provided by the community member, the officers concluded that he may be under the influence of narcotics. Officers detained him and called a rescue ambulance.
The male was transported to a local hospital where he failed to respond to treatment and was pronounced dead around 1:15 p.m.
There were no injuries to the officers.
Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the In-Custody death investigation.
The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s policy. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the incident.
