LAPD, LA School Police, LAUSD, and Councilmember Greuel Encourage Safe Driving Around Schools

What:
News Conference-Councilmember Wendy Greuel will be walking her child to school (Student at Colfax Elementary School)

When:
Wednesday September 3, 2008 7:30 a.m.

Where:
Colfax Elementary School
11724 Addison Street
North Hollywood, CA 91607

Who:
Councilmember Wendy Greuel, Council District 2
LAPD Deputy Chief Michel R. Moore, Operations-Valley Bureau
LAPD Captain Sharyn Buck, Commanding Officer, North Hollywood Division
Captain Phil Trotter, Commanding Officer, Valley Traffic Division
Detective William F. Bustos, OIC, Valley Traffic Detectives
Chief Larry Manion, Los Angeles School Police
School Board Member, Tim Saito

Why:
After the summer vacation, children return to school and classes resume. We want to bring awareness to motorists of the traffic laws in effect around schools in an effort to save children’s lives.

Children are some of the most vulnerable users of our streets. Even though children under 15 years of age represent only 15 percent of the population, they make up 30 percent of pedestrian injuries. Children ages 5 to 9 are at the greatest risk of traffic-related pedestrian injury and death. Many parents overestimate their children’s pedestrian skills.

Regrettably, each year in the City of Los Angeles, many children and adults suffer serious injuries, or are killed, while dropping off or picking up children for school.
