Outstanding Community Member
In recognition of outstanding service to the community and for exemplary display of professionalism and commitment, Volunteer Karim Torki has been recognized as Volunteer of the second Quarter of 2013.
Upon completion of the Citizen Academy, Karim has been assigned to the Northeast Area Community Relations Office.
Karim comes from a law enforcement family and displays a strong desire to help and make an impact in the community.
Since becoming a volunteer, he has made himself available to assist with numerous details and events. He has assisted with the Cadet program, the gun buyback, Eagle Rock music festival, anti graffiti task force. Along with numerous other festivals and community events.
Karim has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and has worked in the software industry for the past 15 years, the past 7 as Manager/Team Leader.
While living and attending school in Germany, Karim worked for a U.S. company where he received and successfully completed training on profiling. The training taught him how to read body language, detect forged documents and detect explosives. This proved to be beneficial as he was able to stop two security breaches. He is also fluent in five languages (Arabic, French, German, Spanish, and English).
When not volunteering, Karim stays active as he is a certified scuba diver, rock climber and marathon runner. He has completed four marathons two of them international and completed the 2013 L.A. Marathon in 3 hours 34 minutes 10 seconds.
Karim has stated that although he could have volunteered for many other agencies, he chose LAPD due to the reputation the department which he learned of during his world travels.
