was raised and currently resides in Santa Clarita, California. He
graduated from Canyon High School in 1980, where he was a First
Team - All League football player and First Team - All CIF baseball
player. He continued his education as a student-athlete at the
University of Southern California where he was a starting pitcher
with the top-ranked USC Baseball Team. He obtained a Bachelors of
Arts Degree in Sociology, with an emphasis in Biological Sciences.
He later obtained his Master's Degree in Leadership and Public
Administration from USC's Price School of Public Policy.

After an arm injury derailed his professional baseball career,
Captain Smith joined the Los Angeles Police Department on March 28,
1988. He worked a variety of divisions as a police officer, which
included North Hollywood, West Los Angeles and Operations-West
Bureau. His assignments included patrol, field training officer,
narcotic's and vice. In 1993, he was promoted to Sergeant at
Rampart Division, where he worked patrol and CRASH (Gangs),
Southwest Division, where he worked patrol and a Special Problems
Unit, and Foothill Division, where he worked Vice, CLEAR (Gangs)
and as an Assistant Watch Commander. Captain Smith then spent six
years as an Assistant Squad Leader with the Department's elite
Metropolitan Division. In 2006, he promoted to Lieutenant and was
assigned to Central Division, where he worked patrol and
detectives, the Office of Operations, Crime Reduction and
Enforcement of Warrants (CREW) Detail, Detective Support and Vice
Division (DSVD), Prostitution Section, Officer-in-Charge, and spent
9 years as the Assistant Commanding Officer of Air Support
Division, the Nation's largest municipal law enforcement aviation
unit. Captain Smith is a Command Pilot and holds both Private and
Commercial Helicopter Ratings with the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA).

Captain Smith played competitive police softball throughout the
United States for the LAPD Blue Team and was inducted into the
National Police Softball Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was promoted to Captain on August 28, 2016, and appointed as the
Northeast Division Patrol Commanding Officer.

Captain Smith is married to his Wife, Shari, and has four
daughters, three of which have graduated from California State
University Northridge and one who is currently attending the
University of California, Santa Barbara.
