LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Friday, November 5, 1999

On November 4, 1999, detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department, Juvenile Division, arrested Efren M. Haas, a 37-year-old school teacher at Belmont High School. Following an investigation of the allegations that Hass sexually assaulted one of his female students while in his classroom, Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Michelle Anderson filed two counts of sexual battery and two counts of child annoying.

During the investigation, officials with the Los Angeles Unified School District had reassigned Haas to an administrative position.

Accompanied by his attorney, Haas surrendered to Juvenile Division Detectives at Parker Center. After booking, Haas was released on his own recognizance. The date for the preliminary hearing is pending.

Officer Granillo of Juvenile Division is conducting the investigation. For inquiries regarding this incident contact Media Relations Section at 213-485-3586
