Officer Involved Shooting in Newton Area

Los Angeles: On November 2, 2001 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Newton Special Enforcement Uniformed Officers R. Golden, 30 years of age, 6 1/2 years with the Department and J. Benavides, 30-years of age, 6 years with the Department were driving south on Broadway from Vernon. They observed the suspect, subsequently identified as Grady Meyers, walking north on the east sidewalk on the 4400 block of south Broadway. As the officers drove parallel to Meyers, he looked in their direction and ran north on Broadway, then northeast in the parking lot at the southeast corner of Broadway and Vernon. The officers made a U-turn and followed Meyers into the parking lot. The officers noticed that Meyers was holding a stainless steel handgun in his hand as he ran, looking over his shoulder at the officers. Officer Benavides stopped their vehicle. Officer Golden drew his service pistol, opened the passenger door, stood behind it and ordered Meyers to stop. Meyers turned and pointed his handgun at the officers. Officer Golden, in fear of his life and the life of his partner, fired one round at Meyers. Meyers turned away from the officers and ran north across Vernon. The officers pursued Meyers and observed him run north through the houses.

The officers requested additional units and established a perimeter. Meyers was subsequently apprehended on the 4200 block of South Wall Street. He was not injured.

Meyers was subsequently booked for 245 PC (Assault with a deadly weapon on a Police Officer) at Jail Division.

Lt. II R. Papke, Critical Incident Investigation Division, provided information for this press release.
