Los Angeles: For more than 100 years, Los Angeles Police Department Photographers have captured Los Angeles history.

Now, for the first time ever, the Department is making a small sampling of it's extensive photo archives available to the public through a city-wide tour entitiled, "To Protect and Serve: The LAPD Archives-100 Years of Photography."

Sponsored by the Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union (LAPFCU), the artistic and sometimes gritty black and white images memorialize moments: Charles Manson's booking photo, the Manson family, crime scenes like the still unsolved Black Dhalia murder, the Onion Field, Adam 12, Dragnet and more. Hidden away for decades, most of the City treasures have never before been seen outside a courtroom or the LA Police Department.

Who knows what images are yet to be discovered among the remaining 400,000 negatives that are still undeveloped.

The traveling tour begins at Parker Center on December 3, 2001 and will then be featured at each of the Department's 18 Community Police Stations as well as the LAPFCU branch offices through May 6, 2002.

For further information contact Officer Joe Buscaino, Community Affairs Group, Public Affairs Unit at 213-485-3281. This media advisory was prepared by Public Information Officer Jack Richter, Media Relations Section.
