City of Hope Fight for Life Press Conference

What:
Press Conference

When:
Monday, November 3, 2008 10:00 a.m.

Where:
City of Hope Medical Center (at the Fountain)
1500 Duarte Road
Duarte, CA 91010

Who:
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca
Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz, Commander, Office of Central Bureau
Officer Carlos Torres’ family
LAPD officers and LASD deputies

Why:
LAPD officers and LASD deputies will conduct weigh-ins, tour the facility and meet with City of Hope patients.  The officers and deputies will also pass out event t-shirts.

This year’s fight for life boxing event will be dedicated to Central Traffic Division Motor Officer Carlos Torres, who lost his battle with leukemia earlier this year.  His family will attend the event, which will be held on Friday, November 7 at 7 p.m. at the Quiet Cannon Golf Course and Country Club (901 N. Via San Clemente Montebello, CA 90640).

The City of Hope Charity Boxing Event started in 1994 when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies befriended a cancer-stricken boy and made a commitment to improve the quality of his life and that of his family. Since that time, they turned to the LAPD to join them in their efforts to help others in similar situations, and the partnership continues to this day.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments regarding the press conference, please contact Roya Alta of the Boxing Committee at 213-241-7163.  Information and tickets for general admission are available by calling the Sheriff’s Relief Association of Los Angeles County at 562-946-7081 or the Los Angeles Police Protective League at 213-251-4554.
