Officer Involved Shooting

Los Angeles Police Department
Press Release
October 22, 1998

On October 22, 1998, at approximately 10:10 AM, Rampart Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a multi-story apartment building located in the 3900 block of West Beverly Boulevard for the purpose of serving a felony arrest warrant.

Upon arrival, the officers identified themselves as Los Angeles Police Officers while knocking on the apartment door. The tenant, who was named in the arrest warrant, opened the door and then attempted to close the door while turning and stepping back. The officers gained entry to the apartment and observed that the suspect had armed himself with a handgun. The suspect raised the handgun and pointed it at the officers. The officers, fearing for their lives, fired their service weapons at the suspect. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Los Angeles City Fire Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There were no other injuries as a result of this incident.

The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.

Robbery Homicide Division in conjunction with Rampart Area Detectives are conducting the investigation.

Lieutenant Dan Hoffman, Robbery Homicide Division was in charge at the scene.

Prepared by Sergeant II Willie Guerrero, Assistant OIC, Media Relations Section.
