Northeast Explorer Post To Host First Annual LAPD Explorer Tactical

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Friday, October 22, 1999

Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Explorer Post will be hosting the First Annual LAPD Explorer Tactical Challenge on Saturday, November 13, 1999 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM at the Los Angeles Police Academy, 1880 North Academy Drive, Los Angeles.

Explorers are young people between 14 and 20 years old who are interested in pursuing a career in Law Enforcement. They are a branch of the Boy Scouts of America. Explorers are taught Law Enforcement fundamentals by police officers. The Explorers provide service to their communities by assisting the police with administrative duties and traffic and crowd control at community events.

The Tactical Challenge is a competition between teams from various Explorer Posts. The competition is designed to test and develop the Explorers' skill in handling police situations. Each team works together to devise and implement a plan in five complex scenarios that would be challenging to experienced police officers. The five scenarios are as follows: 1) A suicidal person 2) A felony traffic stop/foot pursuit 3) An unconscious motorist 4) A domestic violence situation and 5) A building search.

Explorer teams from the following agencies will be competing:

LAPD Foothill Area
LAPD Van Nuys Area
LAPD Devonshire Area
LAPD Rampart Area
LAPD Central Area
LAPD Hollenbeck Area
Santa Barbara Police Department
Montebello Police Department
Cypress Police Department
Whittier Police Department
Altadena Sheriff Station
Altadena CHP Station

Representatives of the News Media are invited to cover this event. For further information, please contact Officer Marjan Mobasser or Sergeant Stan LeMelle, Northeast Area Community Relations Office at 213-485-2548.
