77th Street Homicide Detectives Investigate Shooting - One Dead, Two

"77th Street Homicide Detectives Investigate Shooting - One Dead, Two Wounded"

Los Angeles: On Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at approximately 11:30 P.M., Michael Louis Usher, 24 years old, Jaime Gerald Brown, 19 years old, and Jose Duran, 24 years old, were seated in a car parked in front of 7220 9th Avenue, Los Angeles. Unknown suspect or suspects walked up to the car and without warning, fired several rounds into the car. Mr. Usher and Mr. Brown, who were in the front seat, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper torsos. Mr. Duran, who was seated in the rear seat of the car, sustained a single gunshot wound to his hand. Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Mr. Usher to Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital where he died as the result of his injuries. The other victims were transported to a local hospital where Mr. Brown is listed in critical condition and Mr. Duran was treated and released.

The motive appears to be gang related.

The suspect or suspects, and the weapon used remain outstanding.

77th Street Homicide Detectives Charles Tizano and Michelle Esquivel-Solis are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information concerning this incident is requested to call 77th Street Homicide 213-485-1385 or, after hours, the Department Command Post at 213-485-2504.

Detective III Rudy Lemos provided this information.
