Los Angeles: On Saturday, October 13, 2001, residents of Pacific Area will have an opportunity to visit the Pacific Area Community Police Station and participate in Pacific Area's 12th Annual Open House.

In collaboration with Mayor James Hahn, the "Make a Difference, L.A." Group will be collecting unused cell phones to aid victims of domestic violence. The donated telephones will be rewired by cellular telephone manufacturers and programmed with emergency numbers, which will provide immediate access to help in dangerous situations. Various domestic violence groups will distribute the phones to families at risk, and members of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association will provide free air time.

It is estimated that twenty-four million unused wireless telephones are tucked away in homes and offices across the country. Now there is a way to turn them into lifelines to victims in need.

For more information, please call Officer R. Arnold in the Pacific Community Relations Office at 310-202-4524.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Guillermo Campos, Media Relation Section, 213-485-3586.
